Starship
Starship is an American rock band that evolved from the San Francisco–bay area lineage of Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship, known for a commercially oriented soft rock and pop-rock sound. Formed in the early 1980s after legal and personnel changes within Jefferson Starship, the group achieved mainstream success with polished, radio-friendly production, synthesizer-driven arrangements, and power-ballad songwriting that emphasized melody and accessible hooks. Their music during this period combined elements of pop rock, adult contemporary, and arena rock, often featuring prominent lead vocals, layered harmonies, and glossy studio production typical of 1980s mainstream rock. Starship’s repertoire is characterized by an emphasis on chart-oriented singles and a move away from the psychedelic and improvisational roots of the band’s earlier incarnations.
